Am I Wasting My Time With NoFace for Film?
Published by Toni January 11th, 2007 in Uncategorized. If you haven’t had a chance to check, I’ve recently been spending lots of time on NoFace for Film. I’ve been beefing it up, turning it from just a movie review website to a more well-rounded movie website, with news and trailers. Every day I’ve been posting at least one article, and I’ve been checking my stats to see if more people are really coming.
Well, the good news is that I have had an increase in traffic over the past couple of weeks. But the thing is that it’s not quite for the reasons one might assume would lead to an increase. Sure, a few more people have arrived at NoFace because of the news articles I’ve posted, but still- an overwhelming majority of people are instead looking for pictures…specifically, of baby penguins.
What the hell?
For two months, about 40% of the traffic I get is from people looking for a stupid picture of a baby penguin. Look, Happy Feet was in November. Get over it already. Another 40% of the traffic comes from people looking for Fast and the Furious photos. Jesus people, that movie’s several years older than Happy Feet. What gives?
Another thing that bugs me is that, of the legit reasons people come to NoFace for Film, no one comments. They just waltz in and out. Hell, I’m running a contest that gives away a FREE DVD, and still no one comments! Finally, today one person entered the contest. ONE. Looks like he’s going to win.
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’ve been writing every day, I talk about cool movie-related stuff, I hold contests- and still no one is participating. No one comments. I’m still not bringing in people who might comment. It’s really frustrating me. I don’t want to beg people at NoFace for Film for comments and participation because that’s just in poor form, but I needed to vent, and I’m doing so here.
I’m just really frustrated. All the work I’m doing at NoFace seems to be going unnoticed. People just want their fucking baby penguin and could give two shits about what I write.

No, you are not wasting time. Sure visitors are looking for pictures of baby penguins, but I’m sure a percentage of them have stopped and looked through your it. As you know, I get a bunch of visitors that look for “hermaphrodite porn.” They maybe disappointed by the fact that there isn’t any hermaphrodite porn, but some of them do stay and read the reviews. Also, have you thought about BlogExplosion as a way to increase traffic?
I can really empathize when it feels like people aren’t being interactive at your site. It seems to be the way of the Internet and the blog-universe where there’s this deluge of information and people have to be outrageously unique or deal with a very quiet existence. I’ve found that pictures and name-dropping will help. Only a small percentage of people are eager enough to provide content while the vast majority of people are lazy and surfing-only. The will probably prefer to interact minimally (i.e., not have to type) but to click on a 1-to-5 rating of an article for grading its utility or entertainment to them. And there’s also all the link exchanges for self-promotion - I know you’re familiar with those already for your personal site. Anyways, watching and weighing in on movies and creating websites are a passion for you and I say keep it up. =) I think that unless someone wants to be a successful and commercial enterprise, that the rest of us should just do it as long as we enjoy it.
Marvo- that’s the thing. People don’t stay to read my reviews and articles. I can see from the stats how long they spend, and it’s usually around 30 seconds, sometimes even less. I definitely do use Blog Explosion -and Blogazoo- which I guess partly explains the 30-second thing.
Wyn-I try to put as many images as possible on posts, and I think that in writing about movies and celebrities, that’s plenty of name dropping. I just get frustrated that I see people visiting but not staying long enough, and not interacting.
