Holy Crap, it’s December Already?!?!?

Where does the time go?

Just a week ago I was spending Thanksgiving with my boyfriend and his parental units (which was pretty relaxing and cool), and now I’ve got to think about Christmas cards and decorations! Not to mention that New Year’s Eve is just around the corner!

Before I go on, I just want to elaborate a bit on Thanksgiving. It was pretty relaxed, but my bf and I did get to ride in a 1972 yellow Pantera and a 1992 red Ferrari Testarossa (he did the driving since I was too terrified of wrecking it!). His parents had guests over, and the guy is an avid car collector. I didn’t quite enjoy the ride inside the Pantera since the engine (which sat behind my head) was so loud, not to mention the ride bumpy. Oh, and our dumbasses couldn’t figure out how to roll down the window and sweated like pigs inside. We found out later that the Pantera had power windows. D’oh! The ride in the Ferrari was much better. It had air conditioning, a quieter engine (though it still sat behind my head), roomier interior, and was a smoother ride when you accelerate. I admit that I felt pretty cool tooling around town in a Ferrari, and my bf was giggling like a fool whenever he’d shift gears.

Ok, back to the post…

I love the holidays. I love the warm feelings of food, family, and festivities coming together in December. I guess I’m a little sappy that way. But it’s astounding how quickly they creep up on you these days. Some radio stations now play Christmas songs BEFORE Thanksgiving! Well shit, why don’t they start playing them right after Halloween? I love Christmas songs, but I really don’t want to hear them over the next 6 weeks.

Today my bf and I trimmed our tree. We bought a Christmas tree last night at Lowes, a hardware store like Home Depot. Now, I’m sure that it’s just this particular store, but the guys who are on tree duty are unhelpful assholes. Since we have a small apartment (and a curious kitten who may want to climb it), we didn’t think it was wise to get a huge tree and opted for a small, 4-5 foot one. After a cursory scan of the tree lot, we couldn’t find any and asked the guys if they sold small trees. They replied that they weren’t sure, and to try inside the store. My dad then noticed a sign showing where the small trees were.

We picked out a tree and then started to look for a stand. Since our tree is small, we asked the same guys if there were stands for smaller trees. Again, the geniuses replied that they didn’t know, and to maybe check Wal-Mart. Way to go guys. Tell the customers to leave and go to another store. Again, we searched the lot ourselves and found a decent tree stand.

The guys wrapped up our tree and put it in our trunk (yes, it was THAT small!). When we got back my bf and I started setting up the tree. Much to our dismay, we found that the damn trunk was too short! Granted, you’re supposed to trim a bit of the trunk to open up its pores and water can be absorbed easily, but since the trunk was too short, the lowest branches were in the way, making it such that the trunk couldn’t reach the water in the stand! The dumbasses at Lowes should have trimmed the lowest branches to expose more of the trunk, but clearly they don’t know shit about their job. Today we then bought a small saw and trimmed the lowest branches ourselves. I put on the ornaments and lights and TADA! My very first live Christmas tree that’s my own (not my parents’). I had a tiny tabletop fake Christmas tree in Japan, and I don’t really count that since it was only like a foot tall and made of plastic.

I wrote out a bunch of Christmas cards this week. I sent some already and will send more tommorow. I’ve bought a couple of presents but am nowhere near done. Fortunately I don’t have a lot of people to give presents to.

So how about you guys? How’s holiday preparations coming along for you?

I did my lights and tree the first opportunity I had after December rolled around. Got my decorations from IKEA for my 4.5′ plastic tree. IKEA rocks. Got my Christmas cards too and marked off international, American, and Canadian mail-out dates so hopefully that will be organized and happening all in time this year! I didn’t know The Boy would be into helping me decorate and string up my paltry two strands of lights. It was really sweet!

I’ve got a kick-ass 7-footer. It’s artificial, but it looks great. Loaded with the best ornaments on the planet.
