Preparing for Gluttony Weekend
Published by Toni November 21st, 2006 in Uncategorized.Like many people this week, I’ll be going out of state to celebrate Gluttony Day- er, Thanksgiving. I’m really looking forward to leaving town and just being somewhere else for the next 4 days.
What I’m NOT looking forward to is the airport experience.
Everyone knows that the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day is the busiest time of the year at airports. It’s absolute madness. Fortunately though, we’re at least not taking LAX, because that would just be intolerable. I’m hoping that by taking a smaller airport it won’t be as bad.
But another thing that’s been bugging me the past couple of days is the packing, because I now have to consider the new stupid rules for packing. See, I hate checking luggage. I once went to Houston while my bag went to San Antonio, and since then I’ve been wary of checking luggage- even moreso this time of year when things are hectic at airports. But these new rules about gels and liquids irritate me as I pack.
According to the FAA, they adjusted the rules such that you can bring in your carry-on luggage liquids and gel items as long as they’re less than 3 ounces and stored in a zip-top (as opposed to just a zip-locked) clear plastic bag (this is a size up from regular sandwich bags). Guys, make sure that you follow these rules, because they WILL make you throw away stuff that’s larger than 3 ounces. My cousin and her husband were visiting from Florida last week and they mentioned that indeed, they had to discard a few things at the airport.
On one hand, it’s irritating since you’re forced to buy small travel sized items and put them all in one small plastic bag, not to mention that you can’t bring some specialty items (favorite perfumes and lotions, for example) unless you buy small plastic vials to bring a small amount. But on the other hand, the rules help you be a smarter and lighter packer, so you don’t end up packing giant bottles of contact lens cleaner or shampoo. Actually, because we’re staying at my boyfriend’s parents’ place, they’ve stocked up the guest bathroom with toiletries, which makes it a lot easier for us. Now all I basically have in my plastic bag is deodorant, makeup and eye drops.
I just dropped off my kitten at the vet for boarding. We really wanted to take her along, but we’ll be staying at my boyfriend’s parents’ place and his dad is allergic to cats. We considered leaving her at my parents’ place, but the last time I did that, they complained that she bites a lot (they’re just play bites!), not to mention that they locked her in the bathroom all night. Grrr. Of course she’ll be ok, especially since she’s staying at the vet’s office, but I’ll miss her
So who else is going out of town this weekend? Who else is braving the airports?
Thanksgiving, holiday, airport, FAA, travel rules, toiletries, kitten, boarding

I have to drive 1.1 miles to my mom’s house down the street.
Wish me luck with that nightmare.
My mom made the trek to Illinois with only a carry on and a coat in hand. She brought absolutely no luggage and made it through the holiday hustle and bustle without a scratch or a toiletry casualty.
Thanksgiving was awesome!
