They’re Slowly Taking Over…
Published by Toni August 31st, 2006 in Uncategorized.About a month or so ago my boyfriend and I discovered this really cool Italian restaurant. It’s not a chain, which is great since they’re never packed on Friday and Saturday nights (they still do really good business though). The food is yummy, and the waitresses are really funny and cool.
Recently we went back, and were waiting for our own waiter while seated when we heard a waitress talking to the people over the next table, saying something like, “I don’t know what’s going to happen to us…restaurant…”. Concerned that our new favorite restaurant may close, my boyfriend asked her what was going on.
She gestured to the private party that was occuring outside in the restaurant patio area. “You see that over there? Those are Scientologists- they’re celebrating because they just bought this whole building,” she said, her eyes rolling at the mention of the word Scientologist.
“Shit,” my boyfriend replied. “Yet another reason for me to hate them.” Like many buildings in Old Town Pasadena, this building that houses the restaurant is very old and historical, and houses several businesses including an antique mall and a Mexican restaurant. Now that they’ve bought the building, does that mean that they’ll be buying out all those businesses and start some kind of church/recruitment headquarters?
Several minutes later, my boyfriend became curious and decided to take a peek at the Scientologist party. “Be careful,” I said. “Don’t look too suspicious,” which was funny for me to say since I could see the waitress we talked to staring at them arms crossed, with clear disdain on her face. My boyfriend walked towards the window and stood next to her, trying to appear casual. After a while she walked away and remarked, “Don’t look for too long. You might go blind.”
When he came back he told me that they were holding some type of PowerPoint presentation and -I shit you not- they had giant posters of TOM CRUISE from Mission: Impossible III plastered all over the place. Sad. I wonder why they didn’t have posters of John Travolta?
Anyway, I think it sucks that they bought the building. I really hope that nothing happens to the Italian restaurant and the other businesses there, but I won’t be surprised if they have to move out to make way for a fucking Xenu (or rather, Tom Cruise) shrine.

You know, I’ve tried and tried to read about what Scientology really IS, but I can’t find anything concrete.
It must really be jacked up to keep it that hidden. Cult.
Years ago, my uncle was pointing out historical buildings in LA that Scientologists had bought and was sighing over how wrong it is. I totally love Old Town Pasedena, hopefully the weirdos won’t cause much damage.
People, if all your beef with my religion is that we buy buildings, then why don’t you go be mad at Starbucks, for pete’s sake?
Did you know, by the way, that the Church of Scientology has won a bunch of awards for the painstaking restoration work they do to all the all buildings purchased?
And, if you want to learn what Scientology is about, just go to http://www.liveandgrow.org - or go to your local library and pick up a book (book, remember what those are?)
Can’t find anything concrete my a&&. I have 200 links of Scientology articles on my website, all of which i found through easy Google searches. Mustn’t be looking very hard, that guy.
Its so sad to see how desperate people can get to find a spiritual spark in themselves. Its like that guy on Dawn’s site who thought it reasonable to “invest” a college tuition’s worth of money to find spirituality. If you have to pay for your soul, then how much is it worth really?
The TC poster thing is hilarious. I think Travolta isnt cute enough for their image.
Greg- Our beef isn’t just that your “religion” bought out the building. It’s that they caused the establishments in that building to leave. These were wonderful, independently-run restaurants. It’s been over six months, and the Italian restaurant hasn’t re-opened anywhere. And also, it’s because now they have a headquarters at a prime location full of tourists, who don’t want to be bothered while they’re shopping.
Unsurprisingly, a few months after this incident I went to Old Town, and sure enough your people were camped out on the sidewalk giving out “free stress tests”, which were clearly nothing more than a way to trick people into sitting down and listening to someone give a speech about L. Ron Hubbard or whoever.
Amrita- Travolta isn’t cute enough anymore for anyone’s image
