We’ve Chosen our New Family Member!
Published by Toni August 26th, 2006 in Uncategorized.Today my boyfriend and I went to our local Humane Society. It’s a rather large and noisy place, with all the barking dogs. There’s a section where they keep the dogs, and sadly there are many older dogs in need of a home. They also offer animals such as bunnies, parrots (one kept saying “Hello” to passerby) and ducks!
The cat section is indoors, in a quiet and air-conditioned room. Thank god they keep them separated from the dogs, otherwise those poor things would be a nervous wreck!
We looked at each cat and again, noted the large number of older cats. We felt sorry for them but wanted a kitten. Fortunately, there was also a sizable number of kittens. We picked a top 3 and met our top contender first.
She’s a stray that was found with 3 other kittens (her brothers and sisters I guess- one of which was in the cage with her and was already adopted) and is only 3 months old. She is considered a “diluted calico”, which I think means that she has the calico genes but didn’t manifest them (her fur is gray with brown splotches). She was sleeping at the time that the adoption counselor took her out and introduced her to us, but once she was awake she was up and about and full of energy. We didn’t even need to meet with our other choices and decided that she was the one for us! We couldn’t take her home today since she still needed to get spayed, but after work on Monday I’ll be dropping by to take her home! Yay!
Now, all we need is a name…I want a Japanese name for something unique. Names like Missy, Boots, or Buttons are so common for pets so I wanted something in a different language. Either a Japanese girl’s name or something in Japanese. I thought of Mei, a girl’s name, while my boyfriend (inspired by the Hawaiian surf theme at the Islands restaurant we were at during lunch) thought of nami, which means “wave” in Japanese (incidentally, tsunami means “big wave”). I also thought of keitai, which is a cute sounding word but it means “accessory” in Japanese. Hence, cell phones in Japanese are called keitai denwa, or “accessory phone”.
