Gamblin’ in Vegas
Published by Toni July 25th, 2006 in Uncategorized. Two weekends ago my boyfriend and I went to Las Vegas. Yes, we were insane to go during July, when the weather was 115 degrees AT NIGHT, IN THE SHADE, but we went because I wanted to watch The Phantom of the Opera. Early birthday present for me and all
Anyway, that weekend I finally mustered the courage to gamble on a table. I’ve played the slots countless times and admittedly it gets pretty boring. At the same time, I couldn’t bring myself to sit down at one of the tables and gamble because not only are the stakes much higher, but I feel intimidated by the other players. And for the most part, I still am. I can’t see myself playing a game of traditional poker or Texas Hold ‘em because of the mind games that players play on each other. I just know that the other players can see right through me and would be able to tell if I’ve got a good hand or am full of shit. So I refrained from the card tables.
That is, until my boyfriend allowed me to play with his money and taught me Let it Ride.
The cool thing about Let it Ride is that, although people still win and lose according to standard poker rules, rather than playing against each other, players share some of the cards. And I like that. No mind fuck for me to worry about, not to mention that as long as you know the standard winning hands, playing is a no-brainer. So I played for about an hour or so with 200$ at a 15$ minimum table, and in the end I lost only 15$. the next morning I played for about 45 minutes with 200$ at a 10$ table and lost 10$. Not bad eh?
My boyfriend also taught me how to play Texas Hold ‘Em, but I won’t be playing that in Vegas anytime soon. The betting system alone confuses me. Big blind, little blind- what the hell??
One of the reasons my boyfriend taught me to play these games is because he thinks it’s a fun thing for us to do together, whether or not we’re in Vegas. Before he just wanted me to hang around and watch him play, which I found to be extremely boring. I can’t understand the popularity of those “World Series of Poker” tv shows. Who the hell wants to watch people play cards? I tried watching one of those poker tv shows once and was bored out of my mind. Sure, the players are funny smart asses who try to psych each other out, but often they were just annoying.
Do you guys gamble or play cards? What kinds of card games do you play?
