In Memoriam of Alex
Published by Toni March 27th, 2006 in Uncategorized. As I mentioned in my previous post, my family’s old dog Alex passed away on Friday. He was 9 years old.
Alex was a big dog (half labrador, half bull mastiff), but his temperment didn’t match his intimidating size. He was a very gentle, docile, loving dog who was happiest when we were around him. He’s the sweetest dog I’ve ever known. Unlike our other, more energetic dog Nikita, Alex wasn’t the type to run around and drive you nuts. He was very content to just sit by your side when you’re reading a magazine, or to stand next to you while you water the lawn.
Alex wasn’t a wimp, though. He didn’t like it when strangers approached the house and was very protective of us. He would growl warningly when a stranger or a neighbor would come, but he’d quickly realize everything was ok when he’d see you talking with that person.
Since Alex was quite big, we had always known that he wouldn’t live too long a life. He had also developed tumors and arthritis as he got older, so we knew that the end was nearing. Yet I was stunned and in disbelief when my sister called me.
Alex was actually more of my mom’s dog, and my brother was the one who found him, so they were absolutely devastated that Friday night. As I talked to my sister, I could hear them sobbing in the background. My dad called the Humane Society to pick up Alex’s body.
I like to think that Alex is now in heaven with my grandmothers, having a good old time with them.
I don’t know if dogs have souls but sometimes, from the way he acted, it seems like he did. I would like to think that all animals have souls. They’re such beautiful creatures and it would be a shame if God didn’t provide them with one.
I’m sure you’d like to see a picture of Alex, but I can’t bring myself to look at them right now.
Rest in peace, Alex.
