Update on Interview (Whew!)
Published by Toni February 24th, 2006 in Uncategorized. So I had my job interview today. Since it’s really close, I had no problems finding the place, and parking for that matter. I walked in the building, signed in as a visitor (there’s a good level of security involved, I noticed). I walked in the door, and notified the receptionist that I had arrived for my interview.
I had been preparing this whole week. It’s been years since I last interviewed for a job, so I was very nervous. Last night my bf and I practiced some questions, and he threw some really tough questions. For example, he asked me how I would determine the weight of the Earth, and to tell him how to figure out how many men can carry a car. The idea is that you don’t have to come up with an answer, but describe your thought process. Thankfully, I wasn’t asked those kinds of questions during the real interview!
Anyway, there were 3 project managers who interviewed me. Two were quite young (a man and a woman), about my age. They didn’t say much and spent most of the time taking notes. The third was an older woman, the head manager. She did most of the actual interviewing. I thought she was very affable and easy going. The two younger PMs seemed a little serious at times, but I wonder if it’s because they’re still young.
Sure, I was nervous as hell, but I answered their questions as best as I could. I rambled and stumbled a bit when I was describing an older research project I conducted, and I don’t think I quite gave the best answer to another question, but overall I think I did well. They said that they’re going to interview a few more people within the next two weeks or so, and then they’ll give me a call.
I actually have an idea of how many other people are interviewing- in fact, I know who they are. The reason is that I applied through the school, and when the campus job coordinator sent me an email letting me know that she’d sent my resume, she has CC’d it to the other people as well. I’m kind of nervous because one of the applicants (IMO) has more experience than me in this field. I didn’t know anything about the other two people though.
Well, after I write my thank you letter, it’s now a matter of wait and see. I really hope I get this position. It’s perfect for me. I know that most of the job entails doing a lot of “grunt work” (calling for interviews, administering surveys, inputting data, etc.) rather than actually designing a research project, it would be a great stepping stone for me as I develop my research skills. Also, it’s practically within walking distance to home! You can’t beat that!
Wish happy thoughts for me!

I’ll cross my fingers
Good luck!!
I’ve never written a thank you letter after an interview. Do you just say thanks for the interview, looking forward to hearing from you etc? My sister has been looking for a job for a while. I like the idea of writing a thank you letter.
Damon- Thanks!
Tonz- According to my boyfriend (who has lots of experience in interviewing), in addition to thanking them, you use this as an opportunity to mention anything that you forgot to mention during the interview, or to clear up something if there was some confusion.
After the interview, think about what went well, what didn’t go well, and what you would have liked to say. There’s plenty of websites that help you prepare for an interview. I’m sure some give tips on how to write the thank you letter.
