Letter to a Plagiarist
Published by Toni February 9th, 2006 in Uncategorized. So I wrote an open letter to the person who’s been taking my whole blog posts and putting them up on his blog. I decided to approach him in a civil, mature manner.
So far nothing’s happened, but it’s probably because he hasn’t been online. I have an article due to come out tommorow. Let’s see what he does with it.

If the person doesn’t comply with your request, it’s relatively easy to find out who their host is and contact them about the matter. Most hosting services have provisions in their Terms of Service that prohibit their space from being used for stealing copyrighted material, and they will be able to help you out either by requiring the webmaster to remove the content or by shutting him/her down entirely. My best friend has done this once or twice when someone lifted her entire blog HTML (layout, content) and claimed it as their own elsewhere.
Well, he’s no longer using “whole posts.” It seems to match your RSS feed, which has sketchy copyright rules. It’s an improvement.
Interesting indeed. He’s stopped using images from my blog and is now just using the excerpts. Yeah, I contacted someone who’s got a lot of experience with plagiarism and copyright laws, and he said that the blogger was probably using software to skim off my RSS feeds. Because I had (stupidly) set the feed to show whole posts, he was able to get the whole thing, plus images. It is an improvement.
I’m still hoping that he’ll upload the remaining images to his own server, but this is a good start.
I forgot to mention that I find it amusing that my open letter to him appeared on his blog. I guess it’s additional proof that he’s just using software that automatically skims my feed. He must have been surprised to see that post pop on his blog!
I’m surprised he hasn’t taken it down.
Maybe he doesn’t understand english… He’s just thinking any words good for search engine…
Possibly…after all, he’s also taking posts from a Spanish language blog. Weird…but I think that he does understand some English, because he no longer is using the images from my blog.
