Buying Mom’s Birthday Present

I tell ya people, I couldn’t make this shit up if I wanted to.

The night before my mom’s birthday, my brother, teenage sister, and I were in Borders bookstore. My sister had to buy a book for school but took the opportunity to look for a present for my mom as well. Yes, she waited until the very last minute to do so.

I found her scanning the TV show DVDs section mumbling about how expensive DVDs of more recent TV shows were compared to older shows.

“Awh, man! Look how expensive the Stargate DVDs are! Does she really expect me to get this for her?”

“How much are they?” I asked, then noticed that a box set was about 60$. “Oh.”

She continued to scan the shelf, frustrated.

“Do you think she’ll like it if I get her ‘Diffrent Strokes‘?” she asked.

“No dude! I don’t think she’s ever seen an episode!”

“How about Mork and Mindy?”

“Dude! Do you want her to LIKE your present? Why don’t you buy her a movie DVD instead. They’re a lot cheaper.”

My sister turned to the DVD movie shelves. She scanned the shelves for a few minutes and cried out, “Arrrrgghh!! I don’t know what to get her! She’s seen every movie in the universe already!!”

“Go look in the Sci-fi section,” I suggested. “You know how much she likes watching that kind of shit.”

She looked at the choices in the Sci-Fi shelf. “Man! I don’t know what to get!”

“Oy. Just pick something already. They’re waiting for us ya know,” I said.

“Ok, if that woman wants a present, then dammit, she will have to WAIT!” she said.

Several more minutes pass, with her suggesting several movies and me nixing them since she’d seen them already.

“All right, I give up. I’m gonna turn around, reach behind me, and just grab a random movie.”

I doubled over with laughter as I saw the movie she was blindly pulling from the shelves. She turned around to look at what she was holding.

It was The Fly II.

Trying to regain my composure, I gasped, “Dude! I don’t think she even liked The Fly I!”

“No wait, let me try again!” she said.

This time pulled out The Chronicles of Riddick.

Suddenly I was hit by an idea. “Look- why don’t you get her the Phantom of the Opera movie soundtrack? Dad got her the movie so it would be a good match,” I suggested.

We walked over to the CD rack and started looking. At first we couldn’t find the soundtrack, but I did find something else.

“Hey! It’s the Gladiator soundtrack. If we don’t find the Phantom one, you can get this for her instead.”

“How much is it?” she asked.

“18$”.

“No way! I know she’s only gonna listen to one song on this CD over and over and over…dun DUNNNN dun dun DUNNN!!! And I am not gonna pay 18$ for that one song!”

“All right then, let’s just keep on looking.”

We looked for a few more minutes. Finally I found it.

“How much is it?” my sister asked.

“18$”

“Oh man, it’s so expensive.” she moaned.

“Well, what do you expect? We are at Borders, after all. You should have gone to Wal-Mart, but I think it’s closed by now.”

“But I don’t wanna spend 18$ on a CD.”

“Look- just get her this CD for now and keep the receipt. Tommorow or when you have the time, return this and buy it at Wal-Mart instead. At least you can show her that you got her something.”

So she bought the CD and we all went home.
