A Horrible Mistake at an Airport
Published by Toni July 4th, 2005 in Uncategorized.A happy belated July 4th everyone! I hope you all had a great holiday weekend.
My bf and I have been in Park City, Utah since Saturday morning. We spent the weekend with his family for a July 4th/birthday celebration (he turned 30 last weekend). We’ve had a wonderful time and are returning to California tommorow afternoon.
Actually, we were supposed to be in Utah by Friday afternoon, but my bf had made a mind-boggling mistake.
When my bf booked our flights, he intended for us to depart from LAX since it’s relatively close to us. We called a cab the night before, and we arrived at the airport nice and early. We’d printed out our boarding pass online at home, and we didn’t need to check in any luggage so we figured we’d pretty much breeze through security and have plenty of time to kill.
That is, until I checked our boarding passes.
Our airport departure was listed as ONTARIO airport, not LAX.
The blood drained from my face as I read this.
Yes, my friends- we went to the wrong airport.
Apparently, when my bf was booking our flight about a month ago he did a little price comparison between several airports. For some reason, he booked it for Ontario though he was thinking of LAX the whole time.
Strangely enough, I was very calm at the time. I had no intention of strangling him to death for his major fuckup. That’s love for ya.
We thought about hailing a cab and going to Ontario, but didn’t have enough time. We decided to try and get another flight that leaves for Salt Lake City as standbys.
Unfortunately, so did 4 pages’ worth of people on the standby list.
Needless to say, all flights were full and overbooked, and we didn’t stand a chance in hell of getting a flight.
There was one choice left.
Drive.
We would have to drive from Los Angeles, California, to Salt Lake City, Utah.
On the busiest traveling day in years.
We rented a car and took off.
Now, on the way to SLC we normally pass Las Vegas, and normally it takes about 4 1/2 hours.
Because of the ungodly traffic, it took us about 7.
Yes- SEVEN hours to Las Vegas.
Unfuckingbelievable.
It took us forever to leave California, namely since everyone in the state seemed to be heading to Vegas at the same time.
We left LAX around 4pm and got to Vegas around 11:30pm.
But of course, we had to pass Sin City and keep going.
We kept driving, and by 2 am I was ready to take a break and stop at a motel.
Guess what?
Not only was every motel from Las Vegas to SLC booked, but they stop accepting people after a certain time of night.
We had no choice but to continue driving.
My bf drove all night (I drove a small part of the trip, but since he screwed up, it’s only fair that he drive most of the way, right? :P) and around 5 in the morning, we took a little nap in front of a Chevron gas station for about an hour.
I continued taking naps in the car while he drove, and before I knew it we were at SLC airport.
Hallelujah!
We wearily dropped off the car and hailed a cab to take us to Park City.
My bf cringed at the thought of his parents giving him a hard time for his mistake, but thankfullly they were very cool with him.
We arrived at his parents’ house around 8 or 9 and slept until noon.
I think I should be in charge of all itineraries from now on…

he must have felt like such a heel regardless! you were really cool though. i made a similar mistake two years ago comparing prices and times to go to vancouver from halifax. i know the sensation of blood draining from my head when they didn’t find us on the flight when we were checking in. it turns out i booked us for the NEXT day instead of the day we thought… which is a luckier mistake than getting to the airport a day later i suppose…. but that next day was pretty much one of shame, with my non-forgiving family chortling over how the techie daughter screwed up =S
that’s quite a road trip you’ve got there. oh well, now your man has something to tell about what happened when he turned 30
he’s 30!!! oh my gosh…i guess that’s about right. given that we all went to college together, that makes me feel old!
that’s such a classic story. i must admit, there have definitely been a few times i’ve feared making the same mistake between lax & ontario, and between ohare & midway. these things happen…they just tend to happen to T. haha…
Wyn- At least it was at the right airport
Anna- and now the whole world knows his story as well!
Jen- You think YOU feel old? Hell, I’M going to be 30 next year!
But yes, the weirdest things just keep happening to him…
