“Love” Apple
Published by Toni June 28th, 2005 in Uncategorized.About a week ago my fellow blogger Lee posted an article about super expensive watermelons in Japan. See his post here. What intrigued me more though, was not the absurd and exorbitant price for these melons, but their shape.
Unfortunately, during my stay in Japan I never saw a square or pyramid watermelon; however, I did see some interesting looking apples while I was at the supermarket one day.
As you can see, the word love is somewhat “tanned” into the apple’s skin. It’s similar to having a watch tan- if you wear a watch all the time, you’ll eventually notice that the strip of skin covered by the watch band is lighter than the rest of your arm.
I assume that when the apples were still underripe, they had yellow skin. A stencil of the word love was then applied and left on until the apples developed their red skins.
Looks cool, doesn’t it?

are you kidding me?? i thought someone peeled the apple skin to produce the “LOVE” pattern. you sure the yellow part was really the skin of the apple?? japanese always have loads of crazy, funky ideas. i’m impressed!!
last time when i traveled in malaysia, i found some chocolate- and coffee-flavored durians. though i’m a big fan of chocolate, durians are way toooooo smelly that the faint scent of chocolate is not enough to make it up. i still wonder how people could make chocolate-flavored fruit…watering the fruit tree with chocolate milk?!
I’d eat that apple.
Anna- Yes, the yellow part is definitely skin. No cuts or identations were made on it. BTW, I agree with you in that not even chocolate can disguise the nasty smell -and taste- of a durian. A couple of years ago my family and I were at a Chinese restaurant. For dessert we ordered some fruit smoothies. My sis and I were smart in that we got watermelon, but everyone else took the waiter’s advice and tried the durian one. It was absolutely disgusting, and my tongue barely touched it, let alone taking a whole sip. It tasted like garlic and onion flavored pork fat.
Bug- I didn’t eat this apple. It was too cool to eat.
