Summer Blockbusters
Published by Toni June 17th, 2005 in Uncategorized.(EDIT: Dur, I had to edit this since I realize I forgot to write about Mr. and Mrs. Smith!)
I love going to the movies. I love watching movies. I especially love watching movies in the summer.
Why?
Because that’s when the summer blockbusters come out.
In the past two months my boyfriend and I have seen 5 movies: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (twice!), Cinderella Man, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Batman Begins (just two days ago on opening day).I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer, when I can see more cool but mindless fluff like The Fantastic Four, or action packed but heartfelt movies like War of the Worlds.
Here’s a quick review of the movies I’ve seen. Granted, they won’t be in-depth, but eh!
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: I haven’t read the books, but I enjoyed it. I thought it was really weird but funny. I suppose it was good that I didn’t read the books beforehand, so I was able to judge the movie for itself and not how close it was to the books. Unfortunately, I don’t think this movie did very well since a lot of die-hard, nitpicky, anal Douglas Adams fans were disappointed in it since it “wasn’t like the books”. Oy.
Cinderella Man: Russell Crowe and Renee Zwelleger did a great job in their roles as an out of luck boxer (that would be Russell) and his supportive wife struggling through the Great Depression with their children. Paul Giamatti is hilarious as Crowe’s coach/manager. It’s a good movie overall, save for some cheesy parts. Yes, we get that everyone was poor and struggling through the Depression. Yes, we get that Russell and Renee are the cutest, nicest parents in the universe. Yes, we get that Crowe’s boxer character is a really nice guy- too bad that Crowe can’t be the same way in real life! Why can’t he stay out of trouble, dammit?
The cool thing is that this is a true story, though I wonder which parts they decided to change and leave out, a la A Beautiful Mind. Still- if you want to see a feel-good movie that has the words “Oscar Contender” blatantly plastered all over it, then see this movie.
I won’t go into Revenge of the Sith since I already did that in a previous post. But I will say to go watch it if you haven’t yet!
Mr. and Mrs. Smith: Ok, forget about the whole “Brad and Angelina” crap and just enjoy this movie for what it is- a mindless, fluffy action movie featuring two very pretty, pouty, and beautiful people. The plot is pretty dumb and the ending is even dumber (it left me thinking, “That’s it???”), but Brad Pitt is really funny and Angelina Jolie proves that she can kick Brad’s ass six ways from Sunday.
Batman Begins: Oh my God. This movie is so good. It wipes out the bad memories of those horrible Joel Schumacher creations that featured George Clooney and Val Kilmer. It’s very dark like the Tim Burton versions; but unlike the Tim Burton versions, this one is less surreal and more realistic. The characters are more believable and even Gotham City itself is more realistic. Plus, Christian Bale spends a good amount of time shirtless
RAWRRRR.
What summer movies have you guys seen so far? Which ones do you look forward to watching?

The only movie I’ve seen lately is Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. I’d like to see Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Batman Begins, Fantastic Four, The Wedding Crashers and maybe War of the Worlds. These seem like “theater” movies that just wouldn’t be the same on a TV.
I think I’ll wait for everything else to come out on DVD.
I’ve heard mixed things about Batman Begins, so I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it.
You’re a regular Gene Shallot, Toni.
oh i love those brainless chick flicks in summer too!! i know, i know, those laugh jerkers are supposed to be for those teenage kids who have nothing to do during summer vacation. but what the heck?? i need something silly but funny to calm my fragile, freaked nerves too!!
I really want to see Batman Begins.
I think I’m the only person alive who thought that the Val Kilmer Batman movie was good. Then again, I’m biased because Val Kilmer was absolutely gorgeous in it.
i agree with your thoughts about “batman begins” totally — i loved it
