Happy Belated April Fools!

Oof. I’ve been so busy with schoolwork this past week and today that I forgot about April Fool’s and didn’t get the chance to play a prank on anyone. What a bummer.

I did enjoy some of the blog pranks that I saw today though, such as the 2 Boing Boing parody sites and the “changes” at Go Fug Yourself. I tell ya, people are just so clever.

I don’t think I ever really pulled a good practical joke on anyone. I mean sure, every now and then I’d manage to startle people by hiding somewhere and jumping out to scare them, but to be honest, I’m just not very creative. I’m also quite lazy. My sister, on the other hand, is a little better at practical jokes. When she was younger, she would get us joke presents for Christmas. She’d take some ugly ass, old thing that we owned (like a shoe or a broken toy), wrap it up all nice and pretty and shiny and give it to my brother and me. Sometimes she’d change it a bit by putting a really, really tiny object in a HUGE box to make the recipient think that he/she’s getting this cool, ginormous present when actually it’s just a toenail clipper or something equally gross.

In spite of my sister’s cunning joke abilities, the greatest prank I personally witnessed happened to my roommate. In my second year of school I roomed with two girls, H and J. For some reason, we dabbled a little into IRC nd started chatting with random people. We never really talked to anyone for a long time- we’d just talk to a couple of people for a little bit and then leave. Since IRC was installed on J’s computer, she would do most of the typing while H and I would come up with silly, witty things to say to the other person.

One night we were just hanging out in our room. H’s boyfriend JL and my boyfriend were there too. We all thought it’d be fun to strike up a conversation with someone in the chat room. We then stood behind J’s chair as she typed away at her keyboard, chatting to different people.

There was this one person whose chat window popped up, asking to chat with J. They made small talk about random stuff like the weather, movies, etc. but nothing that revealed anything too personal about J. She wanted to remain anonymous; after all, the Internet is filled with creepy people.

They started to talk about hobbies and sports when suddenly the other person types, “I bet I can guess what your favorite sport is. Is it basketball?”

“No,” J responded.

“Ok, how about baseball?”

“Nope,” typed J.

“Oh, I know- tennis.”

J is slightly taken aback but figured it was a lucky guess.

“I bet I can guess some other things about you,” typed the mysterious chatter. “You’re a college student, right?”

J started to get a bit nervous, as did we.

“Yeah, and you go to UCLA… you live at —-dorm and your name is J—–.”

J’s eyes bugged out her head and leaped away from the keyboard as if it bit her. I got really scared- after all, if the chatter found J, he’s found H and me as well. It reminded me all too well of the scary phone call I received the year before.

While my boyfriend talked to J to figure out what to do, I casually glanced over H’s desk where JL was sitting and noticed something odd.

The exact conversation on J’s monitor was on H’s monitor.

Being slow on the uptake, I didn’t understand why on earth J’s chat window was on H’s monitor until I saw that H was trying her best not to laugh but failing miserably. Then it hit me.

JL was the creepy stalking chatter all along!

When J heard the laughter coming from H and JL and took a look at her monitor, she immediately understood that she’d been played and lunged at JL.

To think that he was typing away all this silly stuff when he was only 2 feet from her desk (H & J’s desks were at right angles to each other)! H was amazed that we didn’t notice what he was doing right away, but I guess we were so into it that we never bothered to look behind us and see what he was doing with H’s computer.

I know what happened to me with the scary phone call wasn’t funny, but I still consider this incident as the greatest prank ever played in my presence. It was so simple, but so convincing.

And now I turn the question to you guys: Did you play any pranks on anyone today? Have you ever been pranked? What’s the coolest/funniest prank you ever pulled on someone, had done to you, or have witnessed?

I was too busy with work, but there was lots of discussion on what would be a “funny” fool’s day joke.. none were that good though ;)

Linda- yeah, pulling off a prank is tricky since there’s a fine line between “funny” and “not funny”.

Donyell- I agree. Sometimes it’s the more spontaneous pranks that work best.

Jen- LOL, I was trying to keep you anonymous by just using your intitial :) Anywho, I was wondering if you’d stop by and get to read this post :D
