O Sole O Mio
Published by Toni February 25th, 2005 in Uncategorized. Here’s another little tale to add to the category of “Weird, Random Shit that Can Only Happen to Toni”.
I have a pair of Asics sneakers that I bought 3 years ago in an emergency situation while vacationing in Rome. In short, I had brought the wrong shoes to wear while walking on cobblestone and my feet hurt so bad that I had to buy a pair of comfy shoes.
After that I didn’t wear them as often since I have several other pairs of sneakers that I wore regularly. One in particular was another, much older, rattier pair of Asics that I wore nearly every day.
Well, the older pair of Asics had finally given out this year. There are holes on the sides which allow for my pinky toes to peek through. I stopped wearing them since I no longer wanted to look like a hobo when I went out with my boyfriend. I could imagine the stares people were giving me, the thoughts running through their minds:
“Why is she carrying a $300 Dooney and Burke purse, wearing an $800 Raymond Weil watch, and wearing those ratty, old ass shoes?”
(BTW, both items were Christmas presents. I am a poor grad student.)
So I started wearing my newer pair of Asics. I had confidence in these babies. I figured, “Hey, the old ones lasted for like, 7 years so I should get a lot of mileage out of this one too!”
Not quite.
Behold.

Yes, my friends. The whole fucking sole came right off my shoe!
HOW???
I have no clue. All I know is that on Monday I felt that part of the sole had come loose, and by yesterday most of it came off. It was just flopping under my shoe, and since I didn’t want to trip I just peeled it all off.
Maybe it was the rain, or maybe it was a defect. After all, its cousin lasted 7 years in all weather conditions.
Here’s a photo of my left shoe, with the sole still attached. Unfortunately it too, will likely suffer the same fate as its mate since part of the sole is loose:

Here’s a photo of the right shoe, sans sole:

Oh and by the way, I’m still wearing them. While I’m at work. Typing.
Yes, I AM this ghetto.

lol, not all shoes are made the same, even asics. that’s pretty riotous/desperate/frugal of you to continue wearing them. =P
Oh Toni, *snicker*I am so sorry *snort*, but I am soooo laughing at the shoe without a sole. Is that karma right behind me because I laughed? I would be ghetto right along with you, out of pure cussedness. I would want to get some use out of that shoe!
oh my! that really blows. i buy really cheap shoes and they only last for 6 months at a time at least. but that’s really freaky.
I have a request: a photo of your naked feet!
wyn- good point; not all shoes are made equal, even if they’re the same brand. Still, I wish that this pair had lasted longer, especially since I didn’t wear them that often…
Ragdoll- I figure, so long as I don’t use the soleless shoe for long distance, power walks, I think I can still get some use out of them for a little while longer. Hehehe.
Nicole- I went through a stage in which I bought shoes of the Payless quality, but when I realized that they practically biodegradable (not to mention that they hurt my feet!), it was time to upgrade a smidge.
Johnnie- Hehehe…your wish is my command!
But don’t get too excited though…they’re not all manicured prettily or anything!
Superglue?
I have experienced this problem before as i have been involved with a shoe manufacturer for 22 years. The problems with these shoes is that I believe that maybe you have purchased inferior copies. It is always recommended that you purchase your footwear from a reliable footwear outlet. Many copies are on the market and manufacturing materials may vary greatly. The white foam midsole is nomally the biggest problem as the densiy can vary up to 30% this creates really bad biomechanical damage to your body. Asics is the leader for quality that we would all like to achieve. Please also note that specially developed glues by top footwear manufactures have high melting points and also a higher cost. Cheap copy footwear uses cheap glue and non linished surfaces. (low cost production). These glues also have low meling points and it is possible to leave your shoes in the sun and the glue will melt. It is easy to see if this has occured as the surfaces where they have come apart will be very smooth almost shiny. The message is dont buy cheap footwear as you maybe funding a pirate footwear company. Hope this helps
ghetto? Its cool to be a poor “niggah”?…
Thats quite sad.
I have had one or two pairs like this in 30-odd years. It doesn’t bother me - I wear them anyway. They still work - just be careful on smooth, wet floors that’s all.
